Interview with Chris Gough (matsuri)

During the "Fuck the Man tour 0-wine" (waaayyyy back in october) i had the chance to sit down with (1 of 3) guitarist from Matsuri. Christopher Gough. the man, the legend, and the then borders manager. check out matsuri at http://www.myspace.com/matsuriyunikoon

Olhar De Vidro- state your name

Chris -my name is Chris Gough, and i am an over all ass hole (as he lights a cigarette)

Olhar De Vidro- oh jesus...umm ok i didnt really plan this but i am just gonna go at it

what would you say is... SCHRALP?

Chris- schralp is an industry term that is.. it refers to just about anything. mostly positive, sometimes negative. you can use it in any context, or form. its a noun, a verb, its an adjective, its an adverb... its all those things. its just a universal word for what you want.

Olhar De Vidro- so we can agree its just a stupid inside joke....

Chris- its not...i mean...

Olhar De Vidro- ok, so next question

Chris-... it can be

OLDV- ok that was off the record(SIKE!) this is on the record...you ready? what is your favorite part about being in matsuri?

Chris- favorite part about being in matsuri.. fuck dude thats a pretty hard question. i like this band a lot. i'd have to say probably... probably song writing actually, its always fun to come up with new stuff. it kind of surprises me the stuff we come up with sometimes. because its like better then anything i can think of. i mean we all throw ideas off of each other all the time. so its always like magic.

OLDV-magic, cool. i like that. how long has this band been going on?

chris- daa god uhh.. too long. no maybe like three years.

OLDV- so i know how you got your name, but was there a "pre matsuri" band? how did you guys all meet? how did the band form?

Chris- pat and i went to high school, and we were friends together so we started playing music that way. and through pats (high school) friends we met thomas, and we all started jamming and doing whatever. then we(pat and chris) had a falling out for a while.. then Thomas and I started another band, with jarred cause we still needed a bass player. then we started writing stuff and we played like two shows, maybe one show or something. then basically pat and become friends again, and we decided to start matsuri, but it wasn't really like anything.. we just jammed. didn't expect it to be anything. we just kind of made it happen. but we have all known each other for a really long time. and andrew and jon are our very good friends, so we are happy to have them in our band now

OLDV- cool

Chris- yea, they are people we met through this band, which makes it even cooler

OLDV- ok this next question is pretty tough.

chris- ok

OLDV - if there was a burning building with both of the new guys...

(chatter in the background... you can hear mark say "oh no... don't do this....")

Chris- i can only save one of them

OLDV-just one new guy. are you going to save jon or are you going to save andrew?

Chris- ok, is andrew out here?

OLDV -no andrew is not outside with us right now.

Chris- ok i would definitely save jon. he is the drummer you know?

Jeff (shout JEFFH8 from calculator.) and you already have two guitar players

Chris ya the third guitar makes it pretty brutal, it makes it pretty heavy. i mean andrew is a really good friend of mine. i went across the country with that guy. coast to coast. but uh he is not out here... so i would save jon.

OLDV good answer, good answer. until it gets printed.

OLDV- then everyone is going to find out, the whole world

OLDV- future plans?

Chris- future plans involve, in the very near future is a vinyl split with MOLDAR, and a tape split with MOLDAR. um its the same thing but on the other side of the tape there is going to be an interview with both bands. and clayton is going to be putting it out on destroy all religions collective. then after that we are all in the process of doing a second deers! split. which we are really excited about. its just meant a lot of adversity. its a challenge because there is a lot of factors involved in it. a lot people. but its coming around. then i don't know.. we probably going to start writing new songs, and hopefully release a full length because its about time we do that. but its not concrete we don't have like a date or anything, its what we plan on doing. we will probably go on a couple of tours in 2010, but for 09 we are done.

OLDV- ok you have one more minute, any last words??

Chris- uhh

Chris-uhh you know what we are not about that, we dont wanna fucking.. we dont want to cause problems with anyone

Chris- uhh i moved to san jose. i love this house. i love living here. i think its going to be extremely positive for the next couple of years. we will see how long it goes. yup. and.. i am in the process of growing another mustache. thats just part of my plan.

its has been a long time since i have updated this at all, but i think it is finally time to start utilizing this blog spot.

ColorChromatic "Tenet" tape/cd release is june 10th. finally after a long long long time we have recorded, and are getting ready to release this full length. along with this release BEAR records will be realsing four songs on a 5-way 12"split with our really great friends in DEERS (RIP), mishka, animal lover, and others(more tba later, i do not exactly have all the information).
